Practical Tailings Dams Break Flood Modeling

ONLINE  SHORT  COURSE | September 10 & 11, 2024 | 8:30 - 11:30 am EST USA

Description

This course will cover the basic steps required to perform complete Tailings Dam Break Flood simulations using RiverFlow2D MT Mud and Tailings model. We will focus on practical application guidelines while providing the fundamentals of tailings rheology as a critical component of tailings dam break assessments. Presentations will emphasize key theoretical aspects of tailings flows and reinforce concepts through hands-on model applications.

Outline

•  Introduction of two-phase tailings flow modeling with RiverFlow2D. Basic equations.
•  Material classes, erosion-deposition and bed material fraction evolution.
•  Fundamentals of rheological formulations applicable to tailings: Bingham, turbulent-Coulomb, Turbulent-Coulomb-Yield, Quadratic, Herschel-Bulkley, Granular, and Voellmy.
•  How to select an appropriate rheological formulation.
•  Step-by-step setup of an initial tailings dam break simulation
•  Processing of the Digital Elevation Model (DEM)
•  Parameter setup for relevant rheological formulations.
•  Considering supernatant water.
•  Imposing initial conditions for dam and tailings areas.
•  Setting up boundary conditions for clear water tributaries.
•  Post processing model results: Maps, animations, cross sections and profiles.
• Hands-on exercises.

After completing this course participants will be able to understand the main processes determining the flow of tailings originating from dam breaks and to apply the RiverFlow2D MT model to simulate tailings dam break flows.
A Certificate of Completion will be provided at the end of the course.

Instructors

Dr. Reinaldo Garcia is Hydronia President and Director of Model Development and Applications. He has 44 years of professional experience in flood mitigation projects, and sediment and pollutant transport, with a strong focus on modeling. He has participated in more than 400 consulting studies in five continents and is the main designer of RiverFlow2D and OilFlow2D models used in more than 80 countries. Dr. Garcia holds a Civil Engineering Degree from the Universidad Central de Venezuela, a Master of Applied Science from the Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal, Canada, a PhD from the Universidad Central de Venezuela and Research Fellow of the Wessex Institute of Technology in the UK.

Dr. Sergio Martinez-Aranda has a Bachelor and Master of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Granada, Spain, a Master of Science in Environmental Hydraulics from the University of Málaga, and a Master of Science in Water Resources Management and PhD in Fluid Mechanics from the University of Zaragoza. Currently, Sergio works as Assistant Professor at the School of Engineering of the University of Zaragoza and is Senior Developer of RiverFlow2D and OilFlow2D models.

Mr. Adolfo Correa is a water resources engineer with international experience in dam safety, floods, hydraulic modeling, and dam breaks for water and tailing dams. He has performed and reviewed numerous tailings dam break studies and works with private companies, associations, and government agencies, providing technical consultancy and training courses in his areas of expertise.

Mr. Nick Calero is a Senior modeler and computer technology professional at Hydronia USA with over 15 years of experience applying advanced computer hardware and modeling software to simulate hydrologic, hydraulic, and pollutant transport in surface water. He has participated in projects where he has implemented advanced network technologies and numerical models such as RiverFlow2D and OilFlow2D to simulate flow in watersheds, rivers and coastal areas. He has developed the software setup to run these models in Cloud environments, including Google Cloud Services.

Requirements

Participants must have a general background in hydraulics. Familiarity with tailings dam material characteristics is desirable.  Participants should be in positions to perform hydraulic modeling applications.

To install the RiverFlow2D MT training software and perform the course hands-on exercises, a computer will be required with the following minimum specifications:
• Operating System: Windows 10 or 11 RAM, 4 GB (8 GB recommended) CPU, RiverFlow2D MT is CPU intensive. We recommend the fastest CPU your budget allows.
• Graphics Card: An NVIDIA GPU card is desirable but not required. Having a GPU card can greatly enhance the model runtime performance for large projects.
• Display Resolution: 1920 x 1080 or greater.

Cost

The cost of this course is US $500 per participant.
There is a 25% discount on the purchase of a RiverFlow2D Mud and Tailings Flow (MT).

Registration includes:
• RiverFlow2D MT model 30-day training license.
• Course Presentation.
• Tutorials videos.
• Comprehensive model documentation.

Training Course Cancellation Policy.
