Short Course: "2D Hydraulic Modeling with RiverFlow2D"

Course Goals

This course, aimed at Hydraulic Engineers, Geomorphologists, Floodplain Managers, and other professionals dealing with flood assessments in floodplains, will provide the knowledge and tools necessary to use the RiverFlow2D two-dimensional model to simulate flooding, dam/levee-break floods and hydrologic runoff. Participants will learn how to build and customize a RiverFlow2D geodatabase, import data, incorporate hydraulic structures such as weirs, culverts, gates and bridges, and generate graphics for velocity fields, depths, water elevation, time of inundation, hazard maps and animations. Emphasis will be made in the recent version of the model for QGIS (Open-source Geographic Information System (GIS).

The course includes hand-on sessions with exercises to practice some of the RiverFlow2D model tools using real-world project data.

Learning Objectives

You will be able to:

  • Get acquainted with the new RiverFlow2D for QGIS

  • Perform complete two-dimensional hydraulic simulations from start to finish

  • Integrate hydraulic structures such as bridges, weirs and culverts in two-dimensional models

  • Simulate inundation generated by dam-breaches

  • Use RiverFlow2D as an integrated hydrologic-hydraulic model

  • Visualize model results using static maps and animations

  • Create hazard maps

Faculty

Reinaldo Garcia, PhD

Dr Garcia is the creator of the RiverFlow2D model and current leader of the developer team at Hydronia. He has more than 37 years of experience applying hydrologic and hydraulic computer models for flooding and riverine applications, including sediment transport dynamics. Reinaldo has developed hazard mapping methods that are used worldwide and has worked in projects in more than 20 countries in five continents. He is a consultant for the Interamerican Development Bank and for the World Bank.
